I have been working on Bug Out Bags for my Family and I for a bit now. Never hurts to be prepared. While I have been building these I have had a ton of questions to ask Myself about what would be in the bags and what would work for every family member in them. You would not believe the questions that pop into your head. " what if the kids were separated would they be able to handle all the things in the bags?  Should I make different bags for each individual? What is most likely to happen? A major amount of thinking. I have now reached the point of what kind of knife should be in the bag..... Bowie???  That is good for me but is it good for them? Multitool???? not very good for large jobs or self defense..... Lock back......switch......as you can see it is very in depth. Just because I found this to be very interesting. I would love to see if anyone has done this. I know a knife is a personal thing and what is good in one case might not be good in another. Just tell me what you would wish to see in a bag for you and your family.

If you could find it for your bag

A ) Model 17 "Astro"

4 3/8" Black Micarta handle,
fastened with removable stainless steel bolts. A slot in the heavy tang and matching hollow inside the handle may be used to carry matches, fishhooks, line and other survival items. Large stainless steel hilt, silver-soldered. Wrist thong. (Name etching only extra feature available.) This RANDALL MADEtm model was especially designed for the seven Mercury astronauts, who carried them on America's first manned space flights. Astronaut Gordon Cooper did the final design, and two of these historically valuable knives are on display in the Smithsonian Institution.

Bark River Wilderness Survival Knife.  A little pricey but great reviews by friend

Glad someone is thinking along these lines. The next several years are going to be very different than anything we have seen before - dollar collapsing, hyperinflation, food shortages etc... being prepared is the best thing you can do for your family. Check out a site called Zero Hedge - see exactly what is going on in the world and what to prepare for. Sounds paranoid to regular people (that don't want to wake up) - but big changes are coming.

This is the equipment I have added since the last discussion. I am building four of these bags as we have four people in the household. The contents of one bag will be enough for one or can supply two for a shorter time period. I will be adding more to the list. I have also been doing weight trials with my daughters. So far the weight is pretty consistent with the weight in their daily use school bags. I will be adding sack jackets and a bevy bag (for sleeping) made from the same material as the emergency blankets. So far it is coming along slowly. The food area needs allot more attention. I found the rations and think these are a great source of calories for these bags. I am very happy with the turn out. I am always open for more suggestions.

Ron,

That is pretty good.  Can you tell me what the weight of the bags are so far?

Total weight on the bag is 15 lb so far. Without the water it only weighs 7.6 lb.

So the water is the contender in this. It alone is 7.4 lbs. That weight will deteriorate with time. But sooner or later you must find water again. I still need to add a few more things in here as well. Hopefully the bag will only hit 20lb. Still allot to carry around with you. Some of the stuff you can dump depending on what you actually need but I am really trying to make it all usable under any circumstance.

well 15 is not bad.  Like you said it will weigh about as much as their book bags.  They just wont have a locker to put it in.  Just make sure everyones bag is set to fit correctly and that should help

Good kit, Ron.
