I collect rigging knives (ie. pretty much anything sharp that includes a marlin spike (a/k/a "fid") in some manner). I have nice examples of most of the contemporary rigging knives.

For the past 30 years or so WR Case has been changing their tang stamp at the start of every decade. I have Case folding riggers (pattern 46, usually made as the "6246") with the stamps from the 1970's, 1980's and 2000's.

So! I need a Case 6246RL made anywhere from 1990 - 1999. Can you help me?

Thanks! Jim, Bristol, Maine USA

G'day Jim - mate, what is a rigging knife? I guess it is used for rigging lol but I gather it is specific to that trade so I am sort of curious as to what they look like. Have you got any pictures of your collection?

... Just went to your page and saw some photos. What is the spike used for in the rigging trade? Would it have something to do with ropes and knots?
From what I understand it's called a Marlin Spike and it's used to seperate rope to splice it back together.
Yes, that's it, the spike, sometimes also called a "fid", is used to lay open the strands of a rope for splicing. Although, in the real world of dealing with ropes and lines the spike most often finds itself prying apart knots that have been pulled too tight.
