The online community of knife collectors

So, the question today is; How much does going to forums or an "online community" influence what  and/or how much you buy in knives?

I have to say for myself it doesn't affect me.....much. I like what I like, and I will not be influenced by others......much. The only time I'm really influenced is if someone talks about or shows pictures of a knife that I might have bought anyway, THEN, it might have me wanting to get it more than before. If it's a pattern, brand, blade steel, etc. that I'm not really interested in, it will have no influence on me at all. And it doesn't matter to me if it's "all the rage", or "everyone else likes it", or "no one in the know buys that"....I buy what I like.

How about you?

It's affected me mostly in the sense that it provides information. That said the knives in my collection are hardly typical. I've tried a couple of knives based on the hype and decided that I don't care any more how much other people like em. I'll figure it out on my own.

So I Guess I'm much the same as the you and James, Craig.

Yep.  I like what I like too.

I like what I like & I buy only what I like !!!

That being said .. I never realized some of the things I liked till I found em on the net .. it's today's equiv of the ole "Sears & Roebuck" our great G'parents relied on.

Are my purchases influenced by what I see/hear/learn on the net .. ABSOLUTELY !!!

Sht, I didn't even know some of my knives existed  till I heard about em in a forum .. then found a good deal for em on the net. Yuppers .. I use the net to find new unique locking folders & the best deal .. and then buy what I like !!!!!!!!!!!

My latest "like's" are in the mail ..

Ten years ago .. I could not readily aquire these. Now, I purchased both of the above w/o ever leaving my keyboard.

YES .. I am influenced by the internet.

.... wonder what I'll find that I like tomorrow ???

True D ale, the internet is good for use as a HUGE catalog, but, does what someone say on a internet site influence what you buy?

I've seen it happen on other forums. Someone starts talking up something, and suddenly one, two or more guys start getting all excited over it when they would not normally be interested in it!

It truely depends on the presentation and credentials/reputation.

e.g. over in the sharpening group there was a discussion that was getting a lil carried away .. A.G. Russel finally stepped in & commented .. everybody else shut up .. end of discussion !!!

Re: HUGE catalog. When someone says I can get this delivered to my door for $ 46.oo .. all inclusive

......... or $8 & change for the lower one.

Or, show's me a unique locking system ..

............. it does attract my attention .. and .. influence my purchasing.

It has little effect,  beyond broadening,  my basic lifelong cutlery passions !!!

I would not say it effects what we buy, but it has been known to have an effect on our looking into different companies.  We only buy what we like but we may be willing to look at a companies production line based on good reviews from known and reputable people.  So I would have to say I agree with Dale

Well said Jan.

Seeing that it was YOU that caused me to order my Geppettos.

Just tryin' to help you out buddy.  I know you were having wharncliff withdrawl.  Donnie says if you dont want them Gepettos, just send them on to a warmer climate like Florida

I 'bout spit out my cigar.  LOL

I buy what I like regardless of what someone thinks about it. That being said, I do listen and look at items that others may have bought or talked about. That doesn't mean I will buy it, it just means I learn about new items and if I think I would like it, I will buy it. I have to agree with Dale and Jan. If it wasn't for the net, I wouldn't own half of what I have.

Yep what Jan said sums it up for me. lol

Craig .. if you are referring to online knife reviews ...

NO ..because I have yet to find one that will hold up to even the most basic scrutiny.

The online reviews that I have read / viewed were authored by sales people (obvious ulterior motive) …or…  simply lacked scientific methodology & were neither repeatable or objective.

I do use  sites that list verifiable facts like … steel types, attainable range of hardness, etc.
