The online community of knife collectors

Well hello, I'm Matt Sherman, a knife collector and movie buff, I think it would be a cool idea if we started a group dedicated to cutlery in movies, it could be swords, knives, or any thing that cuts. A group where fans of movie knives can discuss their favorite blades, talk about replicas, and talk about some cool films. I think it would be a fun group. Tell me, what do you think?

Matt, that sounds like a cool idea to me. I especially like some of Steven Seagals early movies that included knife fights, although I can't tell you the names of the knives he used. If I recall correctly, In his "Under Siege" movies, he used a butcher knife because the character he played (Casey Ryback) was a cook. One of my all time favorites, though, is "The Hunted", which featured Tom Brown's "Tracker" knife, which was supposedly made from scrap iron by Benicio Del Toro's character (in what seemed like about 5 to 10 minutes, mind you), and a knapped flint (?) knife that Tommie Lee Jones' character made in about the same amount of time. I loved Crocodile Dundee's huge Bowie knife when he drew it to scare off some punks with pocket knives. I have to say, though, that the sword fights in "The Last Samurai", some of Seagal's movies, "Kill Bill" 1 and 2, Zorro, and others are, IMHO, the most realistic blade fights because they don't use as many camera tricks to make them exciting.
Don, you make a good point, because the "world of cut" is so vast and diverse. Maybe it would be more fun to just eviscerate the really bad blade movies in our own words. : D
No, no, no! The top dog movie knife is ---- (sound of ancient trumpets) -----
The gladius sword wielded in the gladiators' arena by Maximus Decimus Meridius (aka "the Spaniard") played by Russell Crowe in the movie "Gladiator." NOW THAT'S A BLADE AND A HALF!!!
- intimidating? OH YEAH!! Makes grown gladiators wet themselves in the arena.
- deadly? In the hands of Maximus? YOUR KIDDING, RIGHT? Maximus could cleave an opponent from head to toe with a single downward stroke, or skewer an enemy soldier over a hundred yards away by throwing it end-over-end at him (assuming he had his back turned to Maximus, of course. Otherwise the enemy could just sidestep it, right?)
- doesn't need a nuclear power pack like a light saber does, nor does it advertise where you are like the light saber's gawdy neon tube does.
- the first multi-tool. Besides serving as a formidable weapon, it was used as a scythe for cutting wheat on Maximus' farm in Hispania, as a spit to roast a wild Germanic boar over the camp fire after a really gory battle, and it doubles as a back brace when lashed securely to your back. Also, great for cutting pizzas at gladiator victory bashes.
- makes a cool swooshing noise when swung viciously or a scary whistling sound when thrown through the air.
- can be fitted with a stool seat and a drink caddy for a round of golf with the Roman senate.
- handy for cutting down at least a dozen opponents with one spinning stroke (if they are circling you close enough for you to smell their mouthwash.)
- recyclable for its iron, bronze and gold inlay, which brings a bundle of cash nowadays, especially if you send the old gold in to CashForGold.com. (In contrast, the light saber has very little recycle value because it's nuclear powered and spews nuclear exhaust every time it's turned up to maximum power. Consequently, there's no such thing as an old Jedi knight, only young dead ones who died of radiation poisoning.)
- on the gladius' blade, it bears a stunning engraving of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius and the phrase "Made in Ancient Rome" , not an ugly little stamp that says "Made in Pakistan" or the symbol for a radiation hazard.
- obviously, the gladius is the "caninus ultimus".

I'm sorry, but I have to go with Don on this one, the lightsaber is top dog.

Did you have to pick such an ugly dork to model your light saber?
