The online community of knife collectors
Just in the past 24 hours I've been uploading a bunch of photos into my "iKC Photo Gallery" (at least, that's what I'm calling it). I have to say that the entire uploading process at iKC is WAY simpler and more straight forward than I have encountered at any forum or group EVER.
Scott, what is the underlying "forum software" called anyway?
I do feel like I'm being picky by asking for anything. But, I'm thinking that this might just be a feature option that an "admin" person might be able to activate by checking a box on a control panel somewhere.
We're currently allowed to "sort" the order of our photos by: "Latest", "Most Popular" or "Random" -- also being able to sort photos order by "Title" would be really useful for me. I've used my database knife ID numbers as the beginning of each photo's "name". This makes it easy for me to look "back and forth" between the photos in my iKC "gallery" and the information in my database. It would save me a lot of time if the thumbnails in iKC were sorted in an order that I could re-create in my database.

There is a method that you can use, until there is another alternative.
If your photos are in an "Album", click on the "Options" button and then on "Edit", on the drop down.
Your photos can then be moved within the album, in whic order yoy prefer them.
Keep in mind that this will only work in an album, and not on your photos as a group.

Hey JJ -- thanks for that suggestion. I had not realized that while I was adding or removing photos from an album I could also be re-ordering the photos in the album.
Unfortunately in the "Album Edit" view you are not shown the photos' titles so it's sort of like shooting ducks in a barrel ...blindfolded. :-(
To expand on where I'm going: My plan is to re-title all my photos like this "100158 - Case 62146RL 2001" -- the leading number ("100158") is my database ID number for the knife. With that number I can go to my records and see everything I know about that knife: date acquired, price, tang stamp details, handle description, etc. With the rest of the photo title I'm hoping to immediately convey some basic information about the knife to the viewer. BTW, that "viewer" includes ME -- I'd like to be able to differentiate between pictured knives without having to go back to the database at every step.
Because the "Album View" , like in "Album Edit", does not show the photos' titles I will be doing all my serious photo viewing in the "My Photos" view. It's a little ponderous but I can go through "My Photos", page by page, selecting and copying the knives. When I paste what's copied into a text editor I get:
100158 - Case 62146RL 2001
100157
100155....etc
Sidebar Note: It's funny, the resulting "paste" is different depending on whether I'm in Firefox or Internet Explorer. I drag-select and copy a page-worth of photos and titles. What's copied to the Window clipboard when in FF is each photo's title TWICE. When I'm browsing in IE the photo titles appear in the Clipboard just once.
In the text editor I am then able to do a simple line sort arranging all the knives in order as per my database ID numbers. Once they're in order it's easier for me to relate back to the database -- doing things as simple as knowing which knives are "missing" from my iKC gallery (e.g. the 10056 photo in my "copy" above) or what was the last photo I've added.
I guess it's a little unfair of me to be wanting my iKC photo gallery to behave like Flickr or PhotoBucket. It's just that the NING software is so broad and comfortable that it's a little startling when I run up against something it won't do.
Permalink Reply by D ale on April 20, 2011 at 9:02 Jim .. once you've performed the pic sorting within the album itself .. albums may then be sorted alphabetically.
Perhaps .. set up 1st album w/ pics 100100 ~ 100125 ... 2cnd album with pics 100126 ~ 100150 ... etc.
I've personaly been down this (searchable database) road a # of times. JJ & I even resorted to going off site to create an easily organizable searchable database at one time. Ning simply has some limitations in this area.
HOWEVER .. I'd love to have that last stmt proven incorrect. If you do get anywhere with this issue .. PLEASE .. let me know !!!
Thanks .. :D ale

I'm not seeing anything when hovering over the thumbnails in my album -- either in Firefox, an FF tab rendered by IE or even after opening a full version of IE.The title will show up if you hover the curser over the thumbnail...

In IE: In the "Album Edit" mode I am seeing the popup photo title names as you've pictured above.
Interesting sidenote: For just a minute (maybe it was the first time I went into iKC after re-booting the PC?), in Firefox, the Album Edit function was working = the Existing Album Box and the "Your Pictures" boxes were both properky populated with all my photos' thumbnails.
Something else I've noticed is that in Album Edit in IE the Existing Album Box appears below the "Your Pictures" box while in FF the Existing Album Box is on the same level as, and to the right of, the "Your Pictures" box. It looks more at home arranged right under the "Your Album" header and " see follwoing screenshot:
