Welcome Home...THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY

I bought the knife on eBay to do a littlle yard work.  I've found these Old Hickory knives to be a great bargain.  This is the 410-10  field knife.  (Also sold as the 5070)  It was sold as new!   It has absolutely no edge on the blade!

Compare the Field knife  to a couple of other  Old Hickory's I've bought (a lettuce knife and a Cotton Sampler).  All three are made of 1095 Carbon Steel. The bottom two came with card stock sleeves and and in a plastic bag.  The Field knife did not!  Still waiting for the seller to resolve this matter.   and there is no way I'm going to PAY money to ship this back!

PS:

Old Hickory makes an excellent fillet knife!

That is a shame. Some eBay sellers are shameless in their misrepresentations of the products they peddle. I hope your case with eBay is settled soon.

That was listed as new? What is the definition of NEW?

I sure don't blame you Tobias, a clear case of mis-representation. If you pay to ship it back, then that fee and the payment are all in the buyers hands, the buyer should resolve this matter.

I will keep you posted.  See the pic he had online and his description of New below:

New: A brand-new, unused, unopened, undamaged item in its original packaging (where packaging is applicable). Packaging should be the same as what is found in a retail store, unless the item is handmade or was packaged by the manufacturer in non-retail packaging, such as an unprinted box or plastic bag. See the seller's listing for full details

Well it was new, a long time ago..lol Sorry for your bad luck. I have had sellers on Ebay out right lie to me also. And on a cheap knife, the shipping back and forth will kill you. You just as soon keep it. Then Ebay won't let you give a negative response, unless you do ship it back. Sometimes it can be called, "Epray".

Robert, at the end of the day, I have no plan to send it back.   Cost me $11 with free shipping.  It's dang near impossible for me to get to th epost office with the goofy hours they keep these days and it'll probably cost $5 to send it back.

I figure it will take me all of thirty minutes to get the surface rust off this knife and another 15-20 to get a decent edge on it.  Overall the knife is sound and solid. Had I come across it at a fleas market, I would've tried to get it for about $5-6.  It is quite obviously never used or sharpened.  It was just stored improperly.

My problem is the dude who sold it wasn't honest about condition.

Their reply to me:

"IT WAS TAKEN OUT OF THE SLEEVE AND SENT BRAND NEW AND UNUSED....THESE ARE FIELD KNIVES FOR AG USE....THEY ARE STORED IN OUR WAREHOUSE AND SOMETIMES SURFACE RUST GETS ON THEM.....THEY ARE BRAND NEW UNUSED.....IF YOU WISH FOR A REFUND OR REPLACEMENT RETURN THE ONE WE SENT AND WE'LL LOOK THRU OUR INVENTORY AND SEND YOU THE PRETTIEST ONE WE HAVE.....I'M SORRY FOR THE MISHAP,BUT THESE ARE AG KNIVES ,,NOT HOUSE KNIVES....LET ME KNOW"

(yes it was all caps!)

My reply back:

It will be a waste of time, energy and money to send the knife back.  I suggest you change your product description so people will know these items may come covered in surface rust.  Properly stored knives do not have this kind of surface rust.

Well Tobias, I hope you can remove all the rust you want without damage to the blade. I would also hope the seller heeds your advice and change the description of his product.

His next reply was:

"TO MAKE THAT KNIFE BE SHOW QUALITY JUST WIPE IT DOWN WITH A PIECE OF STEEL WOOL...IT'LL GET SHINEY AGAIN....IT'S BRAND NEW AND UNUSED...SORRY FOR THE DIFFICULTIES,,I'LL DO BETTER IN THE FUTURE............THANKS "

As I mentioned earlier.  I didn't buy the knife to put on a shelf, I bought it to use so I'm not worried that the blade will get a little scuffed.  I'll probably do the old cider vinegar trick and then hit it with an SOS pad.    Maybe even give it a tomato juice soak then sharpen it up.  Should be fun.

After a quick cleaning, the blade has a mottled patina.  Using a Smitth's Jiff-S  10 Second sharpener, i was able to get a  reasonable edge on the blade in about a minute.  I would describe the knife now as "New Old Stock"

As mentioned, I bought the knife to use as a small, light machete/camp knife.  The blade is 10 inches long and 1/8 inch thick.  It is   1095 Carbon Steel and  has a fair amount of flex to it (about 1 inch) .  The balance point is about 1 inch in front of where the wood handle ends.   At $11, I spent $1.10 per inch for the cutting edge it should handle a variety of light to medium chopping chores.  With one stroke I was able to go about 1/2 inch  (13 mm) deep into a 2 x 4 beam of pine.

Oh! One other thing, The blade has that nice ringing sound when it is sharpened or pulled across a smooth surface.  I was even get a few sparks to fly off the blade when sharpening it with a ceramic rod.    Old Hickory knives are some of the most affordable and least appreciated knives on the market!  I should get several years of useful service out of it.

I hope it all works out for you. A little oil, will keep the rust away, that's how it should have been stored.
