A question about the dates of some CASE knifes

I am currently looking at a knife described on ebay as CASE XX 9208 SS 2-DOT 2008. Does this mean that the knife was only made in 2008 or is it simply the first year of manufacture? I do notice knives that are said to be new but have dates as far back as 1998. Again only made in 1998 or 1st year of manufacture? Case fans input to answer this question will be appreciated.?

It is simply a date code. The knife was made in 2008 but it doesn't mean that is the first year of production. Beginning in 1970 Case started using dots and/or X's to depict the year of manufacture. They start each decade with 10 dots and/or X's and they remove one for each year thereafter.

For example, a 2000 model would have 5 dots and five X's. A 2008 model has 8 characters removed which depicts 2008.

Case uses a series of dots to denote the year of manufacture. It means the knife was made in THAT year’s run. The same exact pattern may appear with a different number of dots but then it was be from a different year.

They began using the dot system in 1970. Depending on the decade, the dots will look different, They may be dots, X’s, a series of dots and X’s. Regardless of the symbol used it is called a dot.

Dots: Modern era Case knives use a dot numbering system to signify the year a knife was made. The dots normally appear as part of the knife's tang stamp. 10 dots signify a year ending in zero. With each passing year a dot is removed So for the decade beginning in 2000:

2000 =10 dot
2001= 9 dot
2002 =8 dot
2003= 7 dot
2004 = 6dot
2005= 5 dot
2006 =4 dot
2007= 3 dot
2008 =2 dot
2009= 1 dot

Case knives are all dated by the unique tang stamps they have....http://www.wrcase.com/case_college/tang_stamps/ ......this might help you out

As mentioned the same knife in the same pattern and scale material could be made in other years but then the tang stamp would have a different number of dots

Hi,

Yes, this knife WAS MADE in 2008. It should be a HALF-WHITTLER (2 blades) with imitation mother-of-pearl handles (9 : imitation mother-of-pearl; 2 : number of blades; 8 : whittler).
