Case Classic altered.

Bingo!....It is a Case Classic knife...I wouldn't call it altered. It was intentionally produced with the that tang stamp of "XXX". The Case classics were one of Jim Parkers projects after he left Case. Most of the Case Classic knives were made by Blue Grass cutlery who possessed most of the old tools and dies of the original Case knives. Some of the first Classics were produced in house at the Case factory but Case ran into problems producing them along with their regular production run knives and Blue Grass was granted a license from Case to manufacture the Case Classics. As far as I know only three patterns within the Case Classic series were marked with the "XXX" tang stamp. The 88 pattern- congress, the 94 pattern- gunboat canoe, and the 100 pattern- saddlehorn. If I remember right...there were 2 saddlehorns with the "XXX" stamp...one of them had the "ABC" club etching on the blade and one with no etching on the blade.

Case also made the 54 trapper patterns for the Classics series (along with the three patterns noted). The rest were made by Queen Cutlery under contract for Bluegrass.

Early on in the collecting of Case pocket knives (1960's to early 70's), the idea of a Case XXX knife was kind of an "urban legend". Everyone associated Case with "double X" so it seems that knife fakers decided to make some with the "triple X" stamp and claim that they were genuine and very rare. In one of Dewey Ferguson's early books, he provides the text of a letter from RN Farquarson of Case debunking a phony Case XXX knife.

My guess is that it was Parker's dream come true to finally produce some examples of genuine "CASE XXX" stamped knives when he owned Case.

I did see a XXX on Ebay a while ago. I may be wrong, but if I remember it was Jim Parker selling it.
He probably knows as much about classics as anyone I know of. You might need to buy a knife to get his ear though......

This coming Sunday (Feb.7) evening I'm listing a Case Classic G6394 XXX Green Bone Gunboat pattern on Ebay. The auction runs 7 days and ends Sunday the 14th. I have several XXX classics in all 3 patterns that I bought from Jim Parker when they were released in 1990. It's time to part with a few of them and add something new to my collection.

Jim parker had the most fantastic case classic cheeetah's with abalone...saw them years ago at the worlds greatest knive show in pidgon forge....wonder where they all are today....i saw one sell for 1700$ and that was in the 90's
