I purchased an E. C. Simmons hardware, Philadelphia billhead and found something very interesting stamped on it. I have heard about this but never saw it before. Stamped in red ink on the bottom of the letter was the following:

We, the undersigned do hereby gauranttee that the articles or commodities listed herein were purchased by us under a gauranty by the manufacturer that they were manufacutured in an extablishment in which within 30 days pior to the the removal of such product therefrom, no children under the age of 14 years were employed or permitted to work, nor children between the age of 14 years and 18 years were employed or permitted to work more than eight hours in any day or more than six days in any week, or after the hour of 7 o'clock p.m. or beofre the hour of 6 o'clock a.m.

This stems from the Federal Child Labor Act of 1917. My billhead is dated 1918.

It was ment to prevent comerce in the products of child labor. It was a way for the wholesaler to thwart an attempt to be sued for child labor. sounds like NIKE only in the early 1900's

I find these things very interesting in the development of the cutlery industry as a whole. The language was not unique to E.C. Simmons. It was drafted as a boiler plate for any such business and was used by MANY for the same reasons.

Good stuff there David. Sounds like the seed of an article to me (for you, that is). :)
Here's a little blurb from a Maher and Grosh add detailing a little first hand experience by a customer. They must have been pretty proud of the story 'cause I've seen it in a couple of different adds for the same knife. Could you imagine seeing this in an ad nowadays??

Yea, that's a good one :)
An article of merit that you will appreciate
An Article of Merit

It cuts a slice that's twice a nice
Cuts Like Wildfire!

Yes..I do collect Burns Bread Knives..they really do cut bread better than ordinary knives..like wildfire actually!!:)
"It cuts a slice that's twice as nice" How melodious is that- just sings right out of my mouth. Nice slogan.

I'm not familiar with Burns- what were their years?
I think until the 60's-70???
I got about 4 of them (thrift shop finds)
It has to do with patents on the serrations
Burns Patent No. 1388547
They are kinda "famous" among old deli shop owners on the East Coast ;)

Totally off this topic, but I see you wanted a Burns Bread Knife, too. Are you gnashing your teeth at having been sniped? I was shocked to see what it had gone for. Damn I want another of them, though. By Dr. Biggles on June 11, 2006 7:12 PM
Hey B'gina,

Yeah, I did. I'd been watching it for the last 4 days or so. And it was obvious others were watching it because nobody had bid on it.
Gnashing my teeth? Not really. But sure, I wanted it badly. I love the burns line of knives. I have some used bread knives and LOVE the feel of the handle in my hand. Plus the serrated edges are AMAZING and no company has reproduced anything credible since.
See, modern bread knives have these huge scalloped edges and they tear the bread. Those tiny little serrations are so much nicer. I LOVE Burns knives.
I wasn't shocked at what it went for, I think I bid 75 dollars, that was the most I wanted to pay, winning or no.

A little quote Ive used as a tag line for a few years...

"A knife in a mans hand is as precious as a diamond necklace on a womans neck"
