When you were young, did you have troubles attaining knives?

I have a cousin, and I'd like to share with you a story, leave now if you don't like long stories. ;-D

Now my cousin wishes to own and collect knives, but my Aunt/ his mother will not let him. Now, I think this also has to due with the fact that I got cut so badly (If you have viewed M. Steel's old thread[ Speaking of which, he disappeared, what up with that?], you'd know, but if you don't know I'll make a long story short, I got nerve and tendon damage from a CS kukri).

She sees knives as deadly weapons, basically, she has that mindset. After she saw what they did to me, she figures it will happen to my cousin.

I basically had to break some things down for her, she said "I'm afraid he'll get cut".

I had to say to her, "How absurd, I can't believe you think their is a chance he is going to get cut, of course he is going to get cut!". She didn't know what to think of this, so I said to her simply this, "If you play with fire, you get burned. If you enjoy cooking, you're gonna get splashed with hot oil every now and then, and if you like sharp objects, you're gonna get cut. Knowing how to avoid these things and to be safe is a part of anything in life, he can't shield him forever"

I had to sit my cousin down and also explain to him these things, so I taught him how to use a knife. He started with a Swiss army kinda knife, and I taught him how to be safe with that knife (Because it is a slipjoint), and then I had to then explain to his mother how a sharper knife is indeed a safer knife, and a slipjoint is a prime example.

She is too stubborn, though. She really hasn't even tried giving him a chance at a real knife, so after that long story ( Thanks for sticking around. :D ) I would like to ask, did you all have to work or prove yourselves to get knives? Did you try sneaking some and hiding them?

Myself, well I had to work very hard, because my family isn't one that understands the importance and convenience of a knife (Except my brother).

A lot of dedicated collectors out there, mate. Don't be surprised to see people a couple years older than you with blades in the hundreds.
aye i didnt know we had pee-ons here... jest kidin... im 17 with a pretty good collection 2 ka-bars 1 spyderco spyderfly with vg-10 steel, and i use to have a WW1 german imperial bayonet...
when i was growing up my grand fater used to sit with me on his front pourch and slice a apple with his pocket knife and give me a slice then him a slice so on and so on this is something i do to this day. i never new what kind of knife it was but he would get a stick and show me how to cut away from myself with the knife we would sit for a couple hours and he would just watch me strip the bark off the stick i guess i was about 5 or 6 years old. dont know where they got the knives but my uncles would always give me a knife time to time mostly old schrade fishing knives , also dad would give me a knife and said keep this in your tacklle box . do not have any of these except a case 3068 red bone whittler i found in one of dads old tackle boxes. but i have been collecting the old imperal schrades and hammer brand and camp king knives also ideal brand barlows these are the one i can remenber i used to have when i was younger. know days when i give pocket knives to my nefews and younger people for gifts i tell them be careful ,DO NOT TAKE TO SCHOOL!
My Granddad gave me an old Colonial 3-blade stockman when I was little,....man, did that get a hobby going!...That was 40 yrs. ago. I'm not sure how many knives I own, but it's over 100. I always carried a knife, and usually kept it a secret, when I was young. (under 14) Knives are tools, and my folks recognized that after awhile.
For me... getting good quailty knives would be almost impossible if it wasn't for the internet. I started collecting knives when i was 16 and im only 17 now. All of the stores around me that sell good quality knives won't sell them to you unless your 18. The only the store I know of that sells decent knives to 16 year olds is wal-mart, and the best knives they have there are some $30-$50 kershaws and a couple bucks. But since I have a debt card and a job... I get new knives every week : ) Ahhhh... I love the internet!
Ps: I just have to get to the mailbox before my parents do! :P LOL
How did you find the money for a 42 and 43 seriusly? like coment or pm please
From the time I was 8 years old, I had a Case Cattleman. That's all dad would buy. When my two brothers became 8 years old, they got a Case Cattleman. That's all we used. We lived on a cattle ranch in South Eastern Oklahoma. We didn't have anything else to use on those cattle but a cattleman's knife. You can imagine what we did to little bulls. And every calf we had got their ear "marked". If it was dad's calf, it got a notch cut out of the side of it's ear. If it was Grandma's calf, it got the tip of it's ear cut off. That way we could tell them apart in a herd. There was work every day for a pocket knife. We were REQUIRED, every day, to have ours in our pocket. If we didn't, one of the other boys had to cut a switch for dad to use on the poor forgetful unfortunate soul.
Nope... I NEVER had trouble getting a knife when I was a kid.
IN 1977 WHEN I STARTED THE 7 TH GRADE I HAD A KNIFE BUSSINESS IN SCHOOL..FELLOW DOWN THE ROAD FOR ME WAS A COLLECTOR AND SELLER.. i grew up in Hong Kong and managed to assemble a pretty decent knife collection for someone who was in elementary school, it never crossed my mind that a government would prohibit minors from buying knives till i moved to America.
i still remember just hanging out with some older kids in a mall and stumbling into a cigar store and picking up a lil cigar knife, still have it to this day.
No, I always had a small Case or a small Buck. I wish I had them now! In my family, you got knives around ten years old and guns around 14. We learned to sharpen on a bench stone. Life was good. We thought of knives as tools which they are. Tools with many uses.
