Comment by Jan Carter on July 4, 2012 at 18:46 Robert, I like the idea of the frozen milk jug in the pool. Great idea for helping them keep the body temp down in this heat.
Anyone do anything special to keep the dogs from being so anxious about fireworks? I just spend the evening with 100lbs of lab in my lap
Thanks Miss Jan, about that notice, someones dog died the other day from being left in a hot car. Another cheap and great little cooler is a childers plastic swim pool. I sometime freeze a empty milk jug, with water and make a block of ice, then put it in the pool.
Comment by Jan Carter on July 2, 2012 at 18:45 Casey Dog is a house dog but he has a very large water bowl and when we travel we also have water bowls for him and he never stays in the vehicle without us and the a/c.
That's a great point Leopold, that undercoat can and should come out. It does help the skin breathe.
Robert that's a great use for those tubs, in fact just about any clean container that can hold water in these hot dry conditions will help lots of animals.
Comment by Leopold Lacrimosa on June 30, 2012 at 10:11 I have an all white husky and I live in Phoenix, Arizona where temps can reach into the 110's all summer long. I aways make sure my dogs have access to plenty of water and shade. I never shave my husky as fur is designed to trap mositure against their skin to help keep them cool. But I do make sure his winter undercoat is brushed out.
I use small wash tubs and large bowls around the place for the dogs to lay in and cool off. In my woods, when dry, this time of year, I put out plastic oil change tubs with water for the dogs and wild annimals to drink from when in the woods. You almost can't have enough little oasis of water for them. I have seven dogs and theres always one cooling off.
Bless you Steve for being a good animal owner. Something as simple as water would save a lot of needless deaths. People need to fill up large buckets of water for their pets so they dont run out in this heat.
Herb you are so right, a big part of my day is making sure all our animals, dogs included have clean fresh water. In this extreme heat we put out kids pools for the dogs to lay in and cool down. We put bowls down for chickens to stand in. And we try to provide clean shade for all other animals. Its a lot of work but those animals are your responsibility and we do our best to help them. I am quite certain most good owners do the same.
