Getting pulled over. Knife laws. Fact - or wrong assumptions. DONT SAY TACTICAL TO AN OFFICER!!

Hi, if you are a tactical carrier you might want to add these thoughts to your arsenal.  (I AM NOT A LAWYER AND THIS ADVISE IS A SUGGESTION BUT NOT LEGAL ADVISE)... If you are stopped-it is not a TACTICAL FOLDER it is your POCKET KNIFE even if it is an automatic with a 4.5 inch blackened blade.  Know what you are going to say.  "I carry it to protect myself" Is against the law in some states.  "I sell stuff on ebay and have to cut alot of tape and my cousin gave me this nice pocket knife for my birthday" is ALOT better!!!!.  Dont ever hide a knife and lie.  It is one good way to piss off a policeman and get yourself in trouble......Let me know what you think.  Remember I AM NOT GIVING YOU LEGAL ADVISE!!!! just my thoughts.....

I agree with you...nothing is worse than putting the officer on defense. He is upholding the law and that is his job. This what we pay them for...But getting back to what you said. it would be better to let the officer know you have a knife and that it is your tool (scissors, screwdriver, hose cutter) or like you said, stating what your knife is primarily used for. thanks for starting this thread.
you are welcome. There is actually a legal aid organization to defend us "knife people" that face charges. I am trying to find the name of it out, it is in an old issue of tactical knives I have i think...........
Like gun laws, different states have their own ideas of what is legal. I was pulled over once in my home state of N.Y. with a push dirk concealed on my belt, and 2 large folders in my truck. No problem, no laws broken. Yet when I was in N.J. once (resident at the time) I was patted down by a town cop, and arrested for "concealed weapon" when the officer found a Buck folder in my pocket. Sadly when the case came to trial, the "offending weapon" suddenly became a 12" hunting knife!....I was an adult during both of these incidents, and these events happened years ago, but it illustrates the differences in attitude at the time, in different places, and in different minds.........But the truth is the laws aren't going to get better, and I agree with Joe and Alec, when asked about weapons in possession, tell the truth.
In the state of NY and esp NY city knife laws got much much more strict. You lucked out.
I have to agree with alec. the law in new york( I don't live there but my best friend does and he made the mistake of carrying a kershaw leek) it is now illegal to carry anything over 2 in and if a pocket clip is showing its counted as concealed. neck knives are now very popular.
hey what is the law reguarding pocket knives and college campuses? because at my college everybody (and i mean teachers and every guy and most the girls) all have atleast one pocket knife on them, this didn't really pop into my head until i got pulled over rafter leaving the school and i was like well....if he had searched me then i would have been SOL.
That is a very good question. I do knot know the answer. There is a book called "The Knife laws of the 50 states" that might be helpful and you might be able to find the individual states law online/ Maybe we can enourage people t find the laws and post them....
i've always wanted to see something like that where is this book?
you can order it on ebay or im sure from amazon . I believe it is called "the knife laws of the 50 states"
If you do a little googling you will find it easily
Alec
Hey guys, I shipped some {folding} knives by Fedex a while back, from South Africa to USA.The knives were inpounded and send back to me{luckily} Fedex told me they no longer were able to freight knives and I had to find another couier.
This is very disturbing as knifemakeing is my full time occupation. What next??
dude that sucks. i think UPS might still be able to ship knives
Here is the New York State Law....You can google all 50 states but here you go. I saved everyone a step, at least for us New Yorkians. If you read it in its entirety there are some exceptions. However if they want to charge you with a misdemeanor in NY they are going to. I've learned that the unfortunate truth is that just because you have a badge doesn't mean you do your job well or always do the right thing by the book. Just be careful and use the blade responsibly as a tool and not just a knife.
