This is for all you younger collectors out there , especialy the ones just starting out. Now I know that most of you don't have the money to blow on knives like mine and others in this club , but I hate to say that all your going to find at flea markets is garbage , plain and simple. Most of what I've seen at flea markets is usually cheap knives made in places like China , Pakistan and India. Now I believe that we all collect various types of knives for our own various reasons, such as simply buying a knife because you the design and thats all cool in the game. To some it all up , if your out buying these cheap flea market knives with hopes that they'll appreciate in value as years go on , all I can say is don't throw your money away. Now bare in mind that there are some very good cutlery manufacturers in Japan such as SOG and Spyderco if you have that kind of money to spend , but other than that , knives made in China and the other above mentioned countries will never be considered as collectables in any circle. Good Luck
With all due respect to Alan....I'm going have to disagree with him on several issues. First...you can find some good knives at flea markets....it's not going happen everytime you go to one. I see very low quality knives at gun & knife shows also...not just flea markets. So I don't think where you go to find knives makes that much difference as far as finding quality knives verses junk knives with the exception of an actual knife show like a NKCA or Blade show. Second...you should be collecting knives (or anything else for that matter) for the enjoyment of collecting...the challenge of finding that one knife to complete a set...the enjoyment of being around people with the same interest as you..the satisfaction of putting a deal together and of course bragging rights when you end up with that special knife. I'm not saying you can't make money investing in knives, many people do. You need to ask youself..."how long will I have to hold on to it before I can sell it for a profit?". I have been collecting knives now for 30 years and there are cycles in knife collecting....what may be popular and desirable today (patterns, handle materials, brands...ect.), might not be tomorrow. So how long are you willing to hold on to it? I guess the bottom line is collect for enjoyment and collect what you like. If you can make a profit on a knife when you sell it look at it as icing on the cake. The satisfaction and enjoyment of collecting should out weigh the financial gain. Third...there are some knives coming out of china that are very good quality and are very desirable to certain collectors...an example is Rough Rider and Mtech knives. So don't stereotype that all knives coming out of China are junk.
