Our community's service provider makes changes this month

Just wanted to update you on something NING, iKC's social network service, is doing. While I don't expect anything to change here at iKC, I have been contacted by various members who have asked about NING's decision and if it will affect our community.

Basically NING has changed their business model. Yeap, they are now charging to host communities (including iKC). NING has been wildly successful and yet, evidently, their approach to generating revenue (ads one the right side of our pages, premium hosting services, etc.) isn't getting the job done, so starting this month they are now charging various fees for all communities to remain a NING community.

iKC is going to continue a NING community, so don't worry. Before I launched iKC I explored various community/social network type providers and software packages and found NING to be a really good opinion for us. I already incur some nominal monthly costs as a NING community now and am willing to bear the new fees so we can keep iKC.

Additionally, I do NOT intend to pass these costs to our members. When I started iKC I wanted a place for knife collectors to gather online and my desire has not changed. I'm very proud of our community and know it does provide benefits not found anywhere on the web.

The only change I think you may notice, if you haven't already, is the inclusion of "Sponsors" and select community advertising I'll allow to help defray these costs as we go forward. While I realize we have knifemakers and other businesses as members here who use their presence here to create awareness for their business, I have asked our members to oblige my "rule" of no advertising within our community and now that is an important understanding so I can use any advertising here to offset NING's charges.

If you have any questions regarding NING's change, my request not to "advertise" within the community or just got something on your mind- you may reach me at scott@iknifecollector.com. If, on the other hand, you'd like to explore becoming an iKC Sponser, let me know.

Thanks for your support and active particapation!

I just made the plunge. I only had two weeks left to select our plan and pay, or they would have shut us down. All should remain the same, minus the ads on the community homepage, but if you experience something or see something new (feature) let me know. I'll be poking around over the next few days. They have changed some admin features/functions. Hopefully, there'll be good new stuff for us.

I agree with you JJ. We'd never be able to make a successful transfer to another social network, even if there was one.
